The first Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit took place in 2008, a historic event as the first-ever night race in Formula 1 history. This race, the 15th round of the 2008 season, was won by Fernando Alonso racing for Renault. The race, however, became infamous later because of the "Crashgate" scandal when Alonso's teammate, Nelson Piquet Jr., was asked to crash intentionally to get the safety car out, strategically benefiting Alonso's race position.
